Shirts have been an integral part of human clothing for thousands of years. We simply love making some sort of statement - from flamboyant to understated - with our bodies. Shirts have been worn for protection from the elements and as fashion statements. Wouldn't it be interesting to know what the first cave men and women wore on their bodies? Do you think they simply picked up the nearest leaf, or did they take the time to create something more specific?

Everyone seems to have their own favourite style, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. There are and have been shirts of every size, shape, color, and style. Some are simple tops, while others are elaborate concoctions. If you've never seen a Carmen Miranda costume, you've missed some of the more outlandish ideas.

Some shirts are only worn to be practical, while others are worn as a part of an entire ensemble or as a social statement. Shirts have even become a part of special events or cultures. Just google "Shirt Photography" if you need further proof!

Now technology and fashion have combined to take some shirts into a whole new arena. You may already know about UV protective clothing. Go to any beach or playground and you'll see little ones wearing UV protective shirts and pants. But you may not know you can also buy shirts with UV protection built right in. While sunscreen and shade will always help keep your kids safe from the harmful rays of the sun, UV protective shirts, hats, and other articles of clothing provide an easy way to do that job.

Here's how UV protective clothing is rated:

  • Just like the SPF ratings on sunscreens, UV protective shirts, hats, and other clothing are rated with a UPF value.
  • UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor
  • The UPF factor indicates what fraction of the sun's UVA and UVB rays are allowed to penetrate the fabric
  • The higher the UPF number, the greater the protection
  • UPF numbers generally range from 5 to 50+

Now if you think you'll have trouble convincing your little ones to wear a UV protective shirt next year, don't worry - there are now a ton of UPF 50+ options in the market that are fun, comfortable and stylish. They'll be able to make their own statement - from flamboyant to understated, of course - and you know they'll be protected from 98%+ of the sun's harmful UV rays.

It's a Win-Win. So don't worry and KEEP YOUR SHIRT ON!
